We asked the stylist: Sally Matthews

If anyone can guide us on how to style and give new life to our favourite staples, it’s Sally Matthews. Working for years as fashion director for Harper’s Bazaar, and more recently creative director at The Modist, Sally shares 3 ways to cover-up in style this summer.

Summertime layering can sometimes be challenging, especially as temperatures rise and we are demanding more from our wardrobes in terms of comfort. A lightweight jacket is the perfect staple for summer months which can immediately elevate a look effortlessly.

For me, it is all about ease I want to be able to throw on a simple pair of cotton pants, chunky sandals and finish it with a sharp chic blazer to pull my look together. I love this Bouguessa two tone version for its oversized fit and colour combination.

For a final summer feel, I finish the look by tying a silk scarf in my hair which reminds me of vacation.

Taking my styling cues from a lot 80’s and 90’s fashion, I love mixing masculine silhouettes with feminine details. A good pair of jeans always marries perfectly with a great blazer, here I added a light denim shirt under the look to give it a more menswear feel. Finish the look with heels or a great pair of sneakers.

For me, this lightweight button-down trench is the easiest way to feeling chic. Paired with a great pair of high-waisted trousers or a simple silk slip skirt makes it perfect for easy elegance. The buttons provide enough detail to keep accessories minimal and choosing similar tones to match with it provide a sleek finish.
