A noteworthy name in the fashion industry with a wardrobe to ache for, Elizabeth von der Goltz – formerly at Bergdorf Goodman and Net-a-Porter and a judge on Netflix’s Next In Fashion – has most recently been appointed Chief Commercial Officer at MATCHESFASHION. We speak to her about dressing for winter, what she expects from fashion in 2021 and her advice to budding fashionistas.
What are your key wardrobe items for winter in Europe?
I love statement coats in more classic colours like ivory, navy and camel. Also knitwear is key as it’s comfortable and easy and so diverse. Then great boots – either heels or combat, in interesting colours or animal print.
Do you have your own set of style rules?
I don’t have exact rules. I like to keep things simple and I always want to feel comfortable and feel like myself in anything I wear. For me it’s about confidence so you need to be able to pull off whatever you wear.
What trends do you sense are going to be big for SS21?
Of course knitwear and a more eased way of dressing will remain as it’s our new lifestyle but I love the sense of romanticism and optimism coming through the SS21 collections. Beautiful bright colours, couture shapes, lace - I do believe we will all want to dress up in some way come Spring. For shoes though I so believe comfort will remain key even if in more fashion styles. And jewelry is “the” accessory now so I’m sure we’ll see a lot of layering of necklaces and a continuation of talisman jewelry to bring us luck and protection.
You were a judge on Netflix’s Next In Fashion and Global Buying Director at NAP, what advice do you have for women who want to achieve a prosperous career in fashion?
It is a LOT of work and a lot of juggling and multitasking all the time. You need to be super passionate about this industry as you live, eat, breathe this life.
