The Bouguessa Voice: Nada Taryam

To say that Nada Taryam is transforming Sharjah into the environmental capital of the Middle East would be a severe understatement – she’s redefining it entirely. As the Director of Civil and Architectural Projects at Bee’ah; the Middle East’s fastest-growing environmental management company and a former graduate of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London and the American University of Sharjah, Nada Taryam is using her vast wealth of knowledge to meet company standards at an environmentally sound level of the highest quality.

What can you share with us about your journey on becoming an Architect?

From a young age I was drawn to art and design, I used to like to draw and paint. I knew that I wanted to go into the design field and as such, I chose architecture as the larger scales intrigued me. I began my journey at the School of Architecture and Design at the American University in Sharjah where I received my Bachelor of Architecture degree and minor in Urban Design. I continued my studies at the Architecture Association School of Architecture in London, United Kingdom, where I received my Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urbanism.
I am currently holding the position of Director of Architecture and Civil projects at Bee’ah. I am also a partner at our practice, Architecture, and Other Things.

How would you define your style, is there any particular architectural movement in history that inspires your work today?

I am drawn to the works of architects like Mies Van Der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Le Corbusier they were the pioneers of modern architecture, their works represented a shift in architectural style as a response to what was possible during that time, with the advancement of technology and the revolution in construction materials. We see the same shift happening in this day and age architects are employing more technology, research, and innovation in the design process.

Which project has given you the most satisfaction thus far?

Although it is not completed yet however the journey of working on the Bee’ah Headquarters project designed by the internationally acclaimed architecture firm Zaha Hadid Architects has been a very exciting and challenging experience. I believe once it is completed it will be an embodiment of what all projects in the region should aspire to. The project represents excellence in architecture and interior design, in sustainability, technology, and innovation.

How do you think art, architecture & fashion are linked?

Art, architecture, and fashion are all forms of design and are a result of a creative process. It is the level of complexity and scale is what sets them apart. You see a lot of famous fashion designers with a degree in architecture. Nowadays the boundaries between those fields are blurring and each is inspiring the other. Every fashion house identifies itself with a specific interior architecture language and that becomes an integral part of the brand, adding another dimension to its image. Even art museums aspire to have their own architectural iconic image.

What is your definition of success?

Accomplishing a goal that you have always aspired to reach to and thereafter realizing that you are capable of achieving even something greater.

Describe your style, how do the clothes you wear impact your confidence?

My wardrobe is mostly monochromatic/neutral colors with simple yet interesting cuts. I do like to moderately follow fashion trends, I choose pieces selectively, ones that represent my style and complement it. Which is why I love Bougessa’s pieces and wear them quite often. Her designs exude a sense of modernity yet could still be considered classical. Her pieces to me are designed for powerful and strong women to enhance their confidence while still maintaining a level of comfort, simplicity, and elegance.

What’s your philosophy to live a successful and happy life?

Focusing on yourself and doing what you love, while avoid being distracted by negative external factors. Looking at the bright side of every negative experience that life brings your way.  Being present in the moment and enjoy the company of close ones. Nourishing your mind by reading, meditating and having meaningful conversations with people who inspire you. Surrounding yourself with positivity and people who add to your life.
